Lately I have been watching a lot of dorama. Here's what I've been watching:
Hana Kimi : Once I forgave it for being pretty different than the manga, it started to grow on me. After all, I'm a sucker for the 'girl disguises herself as boy to go to school' set up. I really like Mizuki, and even though he's not from Kansai any more, Nakatsu is quickly becoming my favorite character.
Ikebukuro West Gate Park: Aileen turned me on to this one, which stars Nagase Tomoya. The really cool thing is as the title indicates, the whole thing takes place in Ikebukuro, which is where I spent 80% of my time in Japan. The series seems pretty on crack, what with Tomoya's hot and yet crazy friend who leads a gang called the G-BOYS with his even more crazy sort of russian girlfriend, the young kid Shun who draws gorgous pictures...of dead women, the gals that tag along with them. And of course, Ken Watanabe (yes, that Ken Watanabe) as the police chief brought in to solve a string of kogal murders. According to Aileen, they decided against making a second season because gang activity in Ikebukuro actually rose after this show aired.
Papa to Musume no nanokakan: Also a rec from Aileen, this is my favorite of the bunch. It's basically your old Freaky Friday plot, but this time it's the daughter (high schooler Koume) and the father who switch bodies. It's also fresh and heartfelt and makes you forget you've seen this plot before. (And it includes some things I've never seen here: For example, the mother snuggles up to Koume!Papa, and Koume thinks frantically, 'Oh no! Is my first time gonna be with Mama!? But if I refuse, that might lead to divorce?'. Thankfully, her mother just falls asleep) Both actors are great at portraying each other, but the best is watching the 50 something salary man talking like a high school girl and texting on his blinged out cell phone.
EDT: Finished. I laughed, I cried, I paused the video and ran around the room flailing my arms...this was a really great show.
Jotei: I haven't started this one yet. I came across it by accident, and after hearing the opening narration, I knew I had to watch it. Basically, it's about this girl Ayaka who loses everything, and becomes a hostess to get her revenge, which she will obtain by working her way up to the rank of jotei, the highest position. It looks very scandalous, with lots of scheming and manipulation.
