Whatever happened to separation of church and state? Oh yeah, that went out the window when Bush was elected. Just that annoys me so much, that a President could get away with completely and blatantly ignoring such a basic part of our consitution.
And the other responses of all the conservative, right wing and religious group leaders and representatives, especially those actually in government, while to be expected, are just chilling in their narrow-mindedness and the fear, and hate behind them.
Why does everyone try to force their opinions on others? And also, how does approving gay marriage jeopordize the sanctity of heterosexual union? How does it make marriage between a man and a woman any less meaningful, any less special? No one's forcing them to marry someone of the same sex. Each individual marriage has no effect on each other. And all of the couples would brought their cases to court were mature, well settled adults, with steady jobs, and children as well. One of the couples has been together for 32 years! That's a hell of a lot longer than most 'sacred' heterosexual marriages last. How does allowing longterm, obviously monogomous and obviously very devoted and in love with each other to marry somehow effect the marriage of say, the heterosexual couple next door? If anything, these couples would bring more stability to marriages than a lot of the heterosexual couples who get married, and then divorce a year later.
Why can't people realize that it shouldn't be an issue of religion, of 'family values', that denying these basic rights to gays and lesbians is something that hurts people? In a much more concrete way than they idea that same sex marriage could be breaking down some convoluted concept of American family values and religion that has probably never really existed? That actually this whole issue ties into the separation of church and state, and in reality the fact that gays and lesbians be denied the right to marriage should be as much and affront to common dignity as laws allowing segregation, or denying women rights? How can the government get up at arms about Iraq, etc denying rights to women, etc, when so many of the government members here are working just as hard to deny rights to gays, under the flimsy cloak of 'historical precedence', and 'family values'?
