I have spent the morning listening to the Secret Garden Soundtrack, while making Danielle's apron.
I just can't even explain how much I love that musical. It's basically my family musical, since Em and I both saw it when we were kids, and since Cathie loves musicals, the whole family got in on it. Em and I would 'act' it out for my Dad and Cathie (I believe, in typical older sister fashion, I was Mary and made Em be everyone else. Haha), we'd all sing it on car trips. Every song has so many memories for me: Cathie singing 'If I had a fine white horse' in her best Yorkshire accent, Dad warbling Ben's 'It's a Maze this Garden', bravado making up for the fact he only really knew half the words...
And then there's just the story and the music itself. I was so obsessed with the whole character of Lily, because that was back in elementary school when I was so into ghosts, so a beautiful victorian ghost was right up my alley. And Rebecca Luker's hauntingly beautiful vocals still give me chills. I know some critics didn't like the fact that there was so much focus on the Lily/Archibald storyline, since Archibald Craven's dead wife is only mentioned in passing in the novel - I don't even think she's given a name - but it's one of the best parts of the musical for me, the whole exploration of love and death and how love can both cripple and release people from their bonds.
