Johnny Weir's Press Conference
Feb. 25th, 2011 09:38 amJohnny held a press conference to respond to the remarks made by comments made by commentators on the French sports channel RDS, who said that Johnny set a bad example because boys would 'end up like him', and that he should go through gender testing and/or compete in the woman's competition.
"I also of course call this press conference to address some of the statements made about me by two commentators in Quebec, and you know I grew my beard out a little just to show that I am a man, and you know what? I hope that more children have the same opportunities as me, with the same parents as me that let me be an individual, gave me freedom, and taught me to believe in myself before anyone else would believe in me.
I hope that more young boys and girls can grow up to have that love and support form their families, and it's very clear to me that those two men speaking on that program did not have that kind of upbringing.
I want to be an example in some ways that this has happened to me and even my gender has been questioned in a way, I want that to be public because I don't want 50 years from now for more young boys and girls have to go through this sort of thing and have have their whole life basically questioned for no more reason other than than to make a joke and make people watch their television program.
So I support anybody in this world especially those that have their own voice, their own opinion, their own feelings. And I challenge anyone to question us, because now that we leave in this day in age it's definitely that time for freedom, and for people to be unique and believe in themselves, and not conform to anyone for any reason."
