As fair as summer roses
May. 13th, 2009 09:43 amDespite the fact that the weather man lied to me, as the promised heat wave has not arrived, I felt very summery this morning. I skipped along with SID as my perfect light and airy summer soundtrack, got my coffee from the hot Anthony (who does tell all his customers 'It's my pleasure to help you next.', which amuses me, and sometimes makes me muse about what it must be like to be an hot guy with all the charm in the world and be conscious of the effect you have on women (and some men. ) and danced at the platform because I was the only one waiting for the train.
It reminded me of on the East Coast, or somewhere that has more pronounced seasons when it would start to feel like summer, and how my body/heart would say 'Woohoo! Summer!! Paaar-tay!!' and then my mind would be desperately try to convince my body/heart that 'No,no, we still have [insert number] weeks of school left!! You much focus!', usually to no avail. The worst was in Japan when classes didn't end until like, sometimes in July...
I have become obsessed with this 'Dictionary of Similes' from 1916. It has so many neat ones, with a lot of old words that have long since fallen out of fashion and out of use. (for example: 'gay and gladsome as the air.') Sometimes I think of all the words we don't use anymore and it makes me said to think how tructuated our vocabulary has become. The simile I almost chose for this entry title was 'a step as light as the summer air', which I think it just so lovely and evocative. But I suppose nowadays we don't particular prize a light step as a virtue.
EDT: It's gorgeous and so absurdly warm outside. Like places that have an actual summer! Yays!
