Last night we went to see Miyavi. I have one of his albums, and he has the best tattoos of anyone I've ever seen, and I've drooled at many a picture, but I wasn't really sure what to expect for the show. What I got was amazing.
First and formost. Miyavi is an incredible guitarist. Like, jaw droppingly good. He was amazing, whether he was shredding, doing some more folk like styling, or even playing behind his back or spinning around. I can't believe he's my age. He is amazingly talented. He's one of the best guitarists I've ever seen. I was completely blown away.
He also has a great voice. He can hold notes for a long time, and it's very strong. I liked it a lot.
Reg said that he's like a kid, and he is. He's kind of crazy sometimes, with the faces he makes. He seemed very spontaneous, very earnest, like he thinks of something and then just does it. Very genuine. Sometimes he'd just break into this huge grin. He struck me as one of those performers for whom being an entertainer is very much about being a personality. He really is one of a kind, and his position has let him really refine his individuality and who he is. Miyavi is Miyavi, and no one else will ever be like him, and he will never be like anyone else. Hence, ore-sama. In a way his whole shtick is about being himself and who he is.
He was pretty erotic at times: mouthing his guitar, pushing his shirt up - wow, his abs are tight! - sticking out his tongue and licking his lips, and thrusting and gyrating his hips. He's very sexy.
For the first set, after he took off his kimono he was wearing a white wifebeater, and after a while it was so wet with sweat that you could see his sutra tattoo through the fabric. Which was uh, really hot. Even hotter than all his exposed tattoos, which were also hot. (Is it sad how excited I was that the second shirt he wore was so so low you could see the 'un-do' tattoo on his collar bone? That's my favorite of his tattoos.) At one point, I thought, 'His face is so glowy, does he have glitter or something on?' And then I realized no, it was sweat. So yes. Miyavi doesn't sweat. He glows. XD
It's interesting, Cy and I were talking that although he moves really gracefully, with a lot of swaying hips - he's so graceful the way he moves!! - and had buckets of eyeliner, and has a pretty face, and has these beautiful graceful hands with long tapered fingers and long painted nails, and all of that, he doesn't come off as effeminate like a lot of rock guys do. He doesn't come off as womanly. He's just...Cy said he's elegant, and I agree. He has this almost androgynous grace and elegance about him. He reminds me of Davy Havok in a way, or an onna-gata.
For the encore, they did 'We love you', after talked about how thankful he was to be here, and it was thanks to us that he was here, how he couldn't be here without us. It's true and bands and artists usually say it, but it felt so heartfelt. And then...his soft voice singing 'We love you' over and over and his smile, and all of the audience singing it with him and holding up hearts...I know it's a cliche, but I really felt the love. It was such a lovely moment. We were all connected.
He was just adorable, so so heartfelt. He kept saying 'Arigato na!' and waving and blowing kisses, and assuring us he'd be back and we'd meet again soon.Cy turned to me and said 'I just want to take him and squesh him.' and so did I. This was definitely a show where I went just being a casual fan, and I left really attached to Miyavi. He was really endearing, and he totally won me over, not just as a performer, but as a person too.
The theme of the show was basically the theme of Miyavi's new album, which is called 'This iz the Japanese Kabuki Rock Show', very Japanese. Miyavi came out in this purple fur-trimmed kimono with a classic parasol amid a shower of cherry blossoms. It was awesome. The show was very neat, with a lot of interaction between Miyavi and his back up band the Kabuki Boyz. He had a great rapport with them, with the rapper and the other guys too. I really liked the one guy on our side he was so smily the whole time. Miyavi would play a note and the rapper would imitate it, or he'd play guitar while one of the other guys tap danced on this drum like thing. I can't even really describe it, the shoe was really interactive and interesting, not a normal get up and play music in front of a mic kind of show. Miyavi kept talking about how he wants to destroy the stereotypes of Visual Kei, but I think he's just breaking all kinds of boundaries with his music and his show. It was so innovative.
Oh, the keyboardist whose name was Teddy, doubled as a DJ remixing some songs during the costume change, was really really hot, about high school age, with long dyed brown hair. Miyavi introduced Teddy as his little brother. I don't know if that was literal, but they did really look alike, so it could have been. At one point during the encore, he ran over and smooshed his forehead into Teddy's forehead, it was adorable.
After the show we found Christian, and in doing so, found S-san from work, and Mina from DHC. They squealed and clasped my hand, and we gushed about Miyavi for a little bit. Christian was like, 'Hey, where's my hug?' so I gave him a big hug. It was great to see him. He did a good job DJing. It was fun to watch. I hope we get to hang out again.
