The star system isn't so dead
May. 11th, 2010 10:10 amThis weekend Cy, Rob and I went to go see 17 Again. I enjoyed it because I have a huge thing for any type of Freaky Friday body switching or Big style age switching. And also because Zac Efron is insanely good looking. He's got this real teen heartthrob all American look to him. He's like the embodiment of every single fantasy of what a teenage boy is, attractive not only because he's gorgeous but also because he's young and strong and healthy. He is the American Dream. (This made the Cougar/teen boy dynamic work really well. Haha)
It was also really interesting since I'm still reading The Star Machine, and I think in many way Disney is the cloest thing that we have there days to one of the old studios. The way they manufacture stars and build movies as vehicles for those stars is quite similar.
One of the things the author talks about a lot in the book is how popular numbers were often included in a subsequent movies, and movies that worked for a star were often followed by films with the same storyline, character etc. In 17 Again Zac Efron's character performs an 'inpomptu' dance with the cheerleaders, in his basketball uniform ala 'High School Musical'.
And of course, the movie is type casting at it's best, in the old studio style where performances define a star and a star defined a character. Zac Efron is the the smart, snarky all star high school student, because that's what the audience wants from him.
The movie is vehicle to showcase just how hot Zac Efron is - after all, it opens with him shirtless - and it functions very well as that.
